Newsletter July 2018

Dear Friends,

We at the ECCH never cease to be amazed by the generosity of the people here in Spain, not only do we have our regular supporters who organise events throughout the year but every now again we get a call out of the blue to say – we have some money/items for you – come and get them!

That happened recently when I got a message from Jayne Illingworth to say that the band, Just Brass were having a charity night presentation in Los Montesinos on 8 June and they had nominated the Elche Children’s Care Home as one of the recipients. We were of course absolutely delighted, so our volunteers Bobbi and George Drever went along with some friends to enjoy a lovely evening of entertainment from Just Brass and to collect a donation of 510 euros. Bobbi is pictured below in the yellow t-shirt.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Jayne and everyone at Just Brass for this wonderful donation – this will definitely make a huge difference to the children this summer.

Another out of the blue message came a while ago from Neil of Casalock S.L. who wanted to donate a very large quantity of their end of season stock of brand new children’s clothing to be used for the benefit of the children.

It took a bit of organising but thanks goes to Ann Bartlett for arranging the collection and storage of the clothes. As there is so much (and some for younger children) we will be distributing some of the clothes to other children’s organisation but are selling the majority to raise funds for the ECCH.

At the moment they are on sale at the Emerald Isle charity market every Wednesday in La Florida and the new charity shop recently opened at the Filton Centre, Los Balcones by Ann Bartlett and Sue Wade.

So please drop in and pick up a real bargain or two for your children or grandchildren this summer and help raise funds for the ECCH – we are planning a BIG SALE of summer and winter clothes in September and will keep you posted on other outlets soon.

Sarah recently did a sponsored “Hell Raiser” race with her team-mates at the Quesada Fitness Gym. Despite suffering an arm injury Sarah completed the gruelling course and raised 94.97€ for the ECCH (see photo below). Thank you Sarah very much for supporting the children of Elche.

Jody Pattison has recently set up a car valeting service using a mobile app. Jody already donated 200€ at Christmas to the ECCH and has offered to pay for the children to have a day out karting in Elche. In addition he will be donating 5% of his company’s commission for bookings in Elche to the ECCH. Dr Bubbles comes to wherever your car is to clean your car in an environmentally friendly way, they don’t use a drop of water and all products are 100% ecological – you can check it out on

I recently went to one of Pat’s popular lunchtime events, with entertainer Woody, where she presented me with 600.86€. Pat is a regular supporter of the ECCH, amongst other charities, and we are very grateful for all her hard work to help us raise money for the children.

The funds we have received recently will be going towards paying for days out and activities for the children. This will cost over 2,000 euros in total and will mean that instead of being limited to the confines of the children’s home for the whole of the school summer holidays, the children will be looking forward to the following:-
Street Jump & Burger King. – 120 euros
Water Activities (wind surf, kayac) – 575 euros
Excursion to Cuevas Canelobre Bussot – 80 euros
“Parque Aventuras Elche” -150 euros
“Rio Safari Elche” Zoo – 220 euros
2 x trips to the Cinema – 240 euros
Aqualandia – 420 euros
Iceskating – 100 euros
McDonalds – 180 euros

Costs vary according to the number of children on each trip.

In addition to the above, we have a team of volunteer teachers (practicing and retired) who are co-ordinating fun-packed workshops for the children on the days they are not able to leave the home, to include:

zombie make-up
salt modelling
music workshop
crafts workshop

A big thank you to Teresa Manresa Cuneo, Vanessa Cuthbert, Linda Halbert and Bobbie Drever for giving up their spare time to make sure that the children have some special fun this summer.

The money that we receive from our supporters is crucial in ensuring that we are able to help the children lead normal lives, just like our own children and grandchildren. However, none of this would be possible if we didn’t have our amazing volunteers at the sharp end giving up their time and energy to ensure that it all takes place. When we asked our teachers if they would be able to do something with the children in the holidays they were brimming with enthusiasm and ideas – we had no idea we had such talent lurking in our midst!

We will now be looking towards raising funds for back to school clothing and materials plus text books and equipment for vocational courses (ages 16-18).

If you’d like to make a difference and would like to find out more about volunteering – contact me on and we will invite you along for a coffee and a chat at our next meeting in September – everybody has something to offer, no matter how great or small.

We are starting to wind down for the summer and the charity will take a break during August. However, we are already preparing the very popular 2018 charity Christmas cards (designed by the children of ECCH) which will be ready for sale in September. If you are a business or group and would like to sell the cards on behalf of the charity – please contact me on and I will reserve some packs for you.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
