Open Day May 2018

ELCHE CHILDREN’S CARE HOME
OPEN DAY

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday the ECCH celebrated their annual Open Day at the children’s home in Elche. It was attended by volunteers and supporters of the charity who were entertained by the children living in the home with dancing, singing and live music. They enjoyed a hog roast followed by cakes and desserts which were donated by the guests (always a big treat for the kids!)

Also providing entertainment on the day were Stevie Spit, Simon Morton from Sunshine FM, compere Ricky Neil and singer Cindy Fitzpatrick.

The visitors were able to meet the teenagers and were given a tour of the home to see how the charity contributes to making their lives more comfortable.

We were also delighted to show them the recently installed outside gymnasium paid for by funds raised by ECCH supporters over the last 2 years (6,000€). It was recommended to the charity by the home’s resident psychologist that this would be extremely beneficial to the welfare of the teenagers. As they spend a large percentage of their time in the home, especially in the evenings (because they are unable to go outside unsupervised), a gym would improve their physical and mental health, helping them to burn off excess energy in the fresh air. Pictured are some of the volunteers and staff testing out the new equipment!

On display also was one of the new beds and mattresses which had been bought for the home with monies raised at events hosted by Stevie Spit, with the help of ECCH volunteers Jenny & Roger Warren.

An emotional Stevie was presented with a plaque by the children thanking him for the support he has given them in raising thousands of euros over the past years. Stevie is pictured below sitting on one of the beds with Annette, ECCH founder and Fernando, deputy director of the home.

Sandra Knott from Charity 4 Charities presented 20 x 100 euro La Zenia vouchers for the children, to their absolute surprise and delight, which will be used to buy them summer clothes.

In addition, singer Cindy Fitzpatrick and her mother Frances donated a beautiful keyboard to the home which will provide another welcome activity within the home.

During the day there was a raffle and collection made which raised over 600 euros for the ECCH.

All in all it was a fantastic day, raising awareness for the charity and allowing the children and staff to meet just some of the many people who work hard to raise money and donate items for the children. We are only permitted to open the doors once a year to the public but this event brings happiness to so many people:

The volunteers and supporters arrive feeling sad that children have to be separated from their own families but leave feeling quite elated to see our children in a safe, secure and loving environment.

The children are often bewildered by the generosity of the public and ask us why strangers want to help them – at the open day they can meet some of these people and feel the love first hand – together with the staff who work at the home – the ECCH are their extended “family” and as such our children know that they are valued, loved and respected.

The ECCH would like to thank their volunteers and the staff at the home for organising the event, the children for dancing and singing for us, the entertainers for giving their time free of charge, and the guests for their continued support.

More photos will be on our website www.ecch.es shortly.
